Survey of Strain Gauge Monitoring System Technologies for Industrial Working Machines

The report lists extensively current methods as well as future options for stress measurement system.Industrial trends like Internet of Things (IoT), digital twins and predictive maintenance require more and often real-time information from field operating machines. This also means that sensor-based information about loading conditions and structural strength become more and more important.

Current stress monitoring systems are dominantly based on metal foil strain gauge technology. This is quite mature technology and only small development steps can be expected in the near future. Optical strain gauges (optical fibers) have became a good alternative for metal foil strain gauges as they have been more commercially available. Embedded strain sensors offer interesting possibilities for the stress measurement systems and data-based decisions in the future.
